Videography is expensive. You’re not wrong and there’s nothing wrong with being on a budget and thinking you’ll pass on a videographer for your wedding day. I often hear, “I’ve been on the fence about video but I feel like I’ll regret it if I don’t” and you probably will.

Video is one of those things that you don’t always see its value until long after when the memory has faded. Video is something you watch and gives a deeper perspective on the day. Pictures don’t have the audio of your personal vows and don’t truly show the motion of just how twirly that dress was.

Audio

A professional wedding videographer captures clean audio. The videographer will hide a lav mic on the groom and have special white microphones for the bride that can clip to a garter around the her leg. The videographer will also mic the officiant or set up a recorder off of the pa system. They’ll hide backups at the podium when aunt Susy forgets to do her reading into the mic. They’ll capture clear audio of the audience roaring to see bride and groom enter the reception and they’ll grab a feed directly off the DJs speakers or board to capture every moment of the events audio in clear, crisp, and vivid detail.

Throwing up a camera and using camera audio may get a gist of what they are saying but likely you’ll get muffled audio you cant make out.

The certain things photos cannot not save and that’s audio. If you want to look back on your speeches and remember what was said a professional wedding videographer is going to record that for you.

Its all about the angles.

A professional wedding videographer will have multiple cameras some times 3-4 of them. weddings are wild. Here is a scenario...

You can’t always control uncle bill. The unplugged ceremony is just a suggestion to the man. He’s going to whip out that front facing camera and go full on tunnel vision trying to maneuver his phone, physically flipping it around because it’s a video of his face and the damn thing is just too complicated. (He misses when phones were simple) While he is doing that he backs up and centers his head in the only video camera forming a perfect composition of the bald spot he is been doing his best to hide.

Most wedding videographers will have at least 2 camera ops. So in the event uncle bill backs up into the lead videographer and takes him out, there is still another manned camera triumphantly capturing the first kiss.

I use a combination of this and a program called Aftershoot which uses AI to cull your photos for you. This is often my first step and then I go through and check for only my absolute favorites and neccisary photos. You can get 10% off aftershoot with this code.

With this guide youll be able to kick your feet up and relax by grabbing your favorite console controller and programing it to use keyboard shortcuts. This is a universal keybinding process and can be use it any program such as premier pro for multicam editing, davicni resolve, Photomechanic, capture one Aftershoot or honestly any program with a large amount of shortcuts, Forr this we will be explaining the shortcuts for lightroom.

If you are on a windows PC you are going to want to purchase Controller Companion it is $2.99 and well worth it.. You can purchase it using the steam store, this should be familiar to any PC gamers reading this. You can also purchase it directly from them here.

These statements are completely valid, but any experienced photographer knows that there is much more complexity to a wedding day. The capturing of subtle interactions between family and friends to be imortalized along the complexity of life is the true value of an event photographer. A photographer waiting for the first kiss may not notice the brides parents holding hands, with eyes full of joyful tears. That moment can mean more then anything to the bride when their time has come and she can still cherish that memory long after.

A second shooter’s job is to be focused on what the primary photographer may be too busy to see. The primary photographer is often held liable to getting quality photos of moments similar to what most people say are important. They set their shot and then wait to get an iconic photo of a moment that we all knew was going to happen. While that is happening, a good second shooter is snapping all those reactions to the couples loved ones, and waiting for that same moment.

Emotional heartstrings aside, there are plenty of logistical reasons for having a second photographer. Often, couples get ready in different locations and have their prep roughly around the same time. It’s not always realistic to have one photographer running back and fourth, with the expectation of catching “a few good moments”. You can never really force that timing. Budget is sometimes the concern and that is completely understandable, which is why we even offer using a single photographer.

Lastly, should ‘fit hit the shan' and your bestest boy plays tug with the photographers camera straps, or the ring bearer’s wagon sneaks into the isle just a little too far and ultimately table-top your lead shooter rendering him unconscious for the first kiss. We then have a back up. The second shooter is there heroically, snapping the first kiss. The moment every second dreams of, the moment they become immortalized as they go to and a strong contender employee of the month.

The way I usually create concepts is to come up with a few props and then try to tie it all into a theme. It's not always some glamorously brilliant concept that’s tied to some society based theme, making the statement of a century. Sometimes a concept can just be the light from a candle and how cool your Sony a7siii is in lowlight. Then, you can run with it. Candles go well with darkness because they stand out. Halloween is all about dark and creepy. So making a dark Halloween themed concept around candles is a great choice. You could branch into messing with other creepy things that use candles.

Cults.

My mom doesn't have shit on a Cults’ candle burning output. So putting 2-3 models in creepy white nightgowns, inside an empty room with some jar of colored liquid could be a great concept. Just don't actually perform any ritual sacrifice, killing your neighbor's cat in the name of Satan is universally frowned upon.

Pro tip: Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Nothing says unprofessional like committing arson.

You could probably use an led light with something like this. Screw inefficiency. Cameras are getting better in lowlight, but I’m always alright with faking a few things.

Grave keeper

Nothing says Halloween like a man who declines the efficiency of a high powered led, and instead walks through a cemetery with box full of my wife's tea lights.

Blood.

Filling a bathtub with some nontoxic red liquid, and then surrounding it with candles would be pretty sweet.

Spawn of Satan

A nude /semi nude model with prosthetic horns, covered in a clear gel and some elements of fake blood would look awesome to shoot. Maybe while coming out of a dark cellar or basement.

Knives

I hate knives. Be careful, but jamming a bunch of old used kitchen knives that you got off of Facebook marketplace and forming a circle into a wall, or even the ground could be a cool background.

The camera’s shutter is a mechanical (sometimes digital) device, that opens and closes for a predetermined amount of time. (There is also an open shutter for long exposure shots.)

Shutter is measured in parts of a second. Examples are 1/10,1/15, 1/30,1/60, 1/120, 1/240, but also in full seconds 1s , 5s ,10s.

The amount of time that the shutter is open or that the sensor is accepting light, determines the exposure of the image. It also determines how much motion blur the image gets or doesn't get.

Before you go cranking your shutter up to 1/8000, keep in mind that there are times when the motion blur from a slower shutter can be desirable. You can show a fast moving object, with a still world to emphasize the contrast of energy.

A fast moving subject can be followed as it passes, producing a clear crisp subject and it can emphasize the motion in a single image. Or you can always use a flash to preserve your subject and blur the background, using a process called Shutter Drag. Common examples are often used in motorcycle photography.

Contrast to using motion blur, you can always crank up the shutter and freeze motion. This can be awesome when capturing moments that are typically too quick to appreciate all of the fine details. Like someone or something frozen in mid air, or the spray of water, dirt or dust.

For video : Typically, you double or divide your shutter in half, in order to move up and down full stops of light. For video, it's often advised to follow the 180 rule. This is the perceived cinematic “normal”, in which you are doubling the frame rate to identify the shutter. Using the 180 rule, if you shoot in 24p as a frame rate, than your shutter should be set to 1/48 or 1/50. This is not so much a rule, but more of a guide. I encourage you to experiment with different frame rates and faster shutters, to produce crisper motion with less motion blur.
